July Update

Hey guys,

I hope everyone is keeping okay. I said last time I’d be talking about something new this week, there’s a lot to cover so I’ll get right to it. My main goal since late last year has been to make a real effort to learn programming so that I can contribute more than design and direction to Carnal Souls. I think I’ve made some good progress. In fact, the things I’ve been able to put together in practice projects have worked well enough that I think with some more study and exercises I could make something functional. Not pretty, but functional.

My idea is this: On my own, make some small, Carnal Souls spinoff type game. Secondary in all priorities to CS itself, which comes first. By doing so I can continue to learn to program and, Gods willing, give you guys something to play. Let me say very clearly that this won’t replace CS. It’s just something I want to make that will give me a goal to work towards in my study and also serve to have some sort of game you guys can play. I’m aware it isn’t what people paid for, it’s not supposed to be, but I figure some game is better than no game. And if people do like it, maybe it’s a way we can gather more support for the full project.


Mid-June Update

Hey guys,

Apologies for the late update. I forewent the last one both out of respect and deference to what has been happening. Usually on matters of conflict and opinion I stay out of it, but I don’t think anyone can afford silence right now, or worse, pretending it’s not happening to avoid being ‘political’.

I’ve needed to take what my friends recommended as ‘mental health days’. It’s helped, somewhat. I’ve seen so many people murdered or viciously attacked recently that it’s been practically impossible to shut it out and focus on happy horny creative endeavors, so I’ve sequestered myself the last few days. I recommend anyone else finding themselves drained by it all should do the same.

That being said, I still have a lot of writing to post, which I still need to bring myself to do. I’ve also had some ideas on what I can do for Carnal Souls, which I’m not fully ready to talk about but I think (hope) it’ll be a well-recieved course of action. If I can get my head right I’m excited about its prospects, as are members of the team.

Mid-May Update

Hey guys,

Recently I’ve taken a break from learning programming to focus a little more on writing. Somewhat of a guilty pleasure I rationalise by noting how important it will be for the game, it’ll be a bit of a letdown if the writing’s sub-par. Mostly, however, it’s been for my own good. I doubt I’m alone in that things as they are in the world right now isn’t helping anyone’s mental health, so I’ve been mitigating that as best I can for myself. It’s been about six months since I left the house, admittedly longer than usual for me.

The story I’m writing is a challenging (but very lewd) one involving all of my and my friend Boo’s OC’s. I’ve had a drafted outline of the story for a while, but I’m now finished with chapter 9, and after I finish the tenth I plan to post it on FA, SoFurry, and perhaps other places a chapter at a time and perhaps keep it as an ongoing project. Like with CS, my goal is a story that has good characters and storytelling with smut woven into it. In this case, given our characters, a lot of hyper-sized goings-on, but also some interwoven plots and arcs which has been a new challenge for me.

I’ll be sure to link it in future updates if anyone here’s interested in it. I’d also be interested to know what people think of it. Thank you also for all the reading suggestions last update, I’ve got lots to get through now.

May Update

Hey guys,

Thanks to Crimson we have the site certificate renewed again, apologies it was out for so long. If the site’s ever down you can find information usually on our twitter, @CarnalSouls, letting you know what’s up. I have to also apologise for a rather atrocious PM that got sent out by a spam account to a few users providing spam links under the guise of selling Covid-19 protective items. They were banned within minutes of it going out, but that doesn’t make it any less of a despicable thing to do.

As for game news I’m more limited than usual in how unavailable everyone is, but I have been thinking a lot about our magic system and how it exists in the world. After reading the Kingkiller books recently it’s given me the impetus to have a closer look at it and see what I can do to make it new and interesting. If you guys can make any recommendations for fantasy books with cool magic stuff in them I’d be glad to hear about them; fiction is a nice retreat from everything going on right now.

I hope everyone is keeping safe and helping eachother when they can.

Mid-March Update

Hey guys,

I hope everyone’s taking care of themselves and one another with Covid-19 becoming an increasingly larger problem. Remember it’s a case of flattening the curve, if we all do that things will be better sooner. I mention this to begin with since two of my friends are now quarantined, one of whom is the friend helping me with CS and learning programming. He’s okay, but with the huge shift in his company now temporarily working from home (and he being in charge of that shift) it means very little extra time for me.

There’s not a great deal else I can do at the moment but continue to learn so that I can better help develop this game myself, which I’ll continue to do as best I can. There was actually a point as a teenager when I gave up on learning programming because I couldn’t wrap my head around the idea of an array. I’ve come quite a way since then, but I’m not the smartest, so please bear with me.

Mid-February Update

Hey guys,

Crimson is out of action for a while with some pretty serious health issues. However one of the newest helpers on the team has managed to get some things accomplished. It’s asking a great deal of him to join an alien project and essentially take the coding reigns while I’m still studying, but he’s doing a great job. I hope you’ll join me in wishing Crimson a quick recovery in the mean time.

I’m making headway, in that I only have a few hours a day that painkillers grant me to focus, but progress is certainly occurring on that front. Currently I’m wrestling with the concept of orders of operation. It’s one thing to say, for instance, that this healthbar should read from this character’s health value, but presents problems when the healthbar exists microseconds before the character does. It’ll throw errors trying to find a character that isn’t there. So, knowing how the heirarchy of elements are generated and in which order is a much larger part of things than I thought, especially when there are dozens of them, but I’m gradually getting the hang of it I think.

Also, I got some mice. Kinda had to give up on the idea of owning a dog of my own, but I love them to bits. Here’s a particularly decent picture I took of the argent, named Gytha.

February Update

Hey guys,

Sorry about missing a week there, I was pretty darn sick for a bit, on top of the usual January chores to take care of. Filing taxes and similar things to do with my disability stuff. I have found time to reume my programming practice, though. I’ve been keeping a kind of journal as I go, so I don’t forget where I was or what I was doing after a break. The kind of code I’m trying to understand is qualified university level stuff, but I’m slowly getting a grip on it. I think so, anyway.

The others have had a fairly difficult new year so far, but things will hopefully calm down soon. I’m eager to try and put some of the things I’ve learned into practice, but can’t yet do so on my own. Our newest addition has had a hell of a new year but is keen to resume after the holiday ups and downs. He’s managed to do some good things in a very short period of time.

I hope everyone’s new year is going well, despite the plagues of locusts, hellfire on earth, flooding, new pandemic viruses, and growing rifts in global politics.

January Update

Happy new year, everyone!

As mentioned last update, most of us were with family and friends over the holidays so there’s little to report. I have however been keeping up with my programming studies and making steady progress. I’m currently learning about encapsulation and more advanced best practices. If anyone can point me to good lectures on programming, especially those involving games, I’d be very appreciative. Language is unimportant, mostly, it’s the concepts and design philosophies I’m looking for.

We’re all trying to do everything we can to make this year the year of a release. Look after one another, and here’s to a great new year to everyone.

Mid-December Update

Hey guys,

It’s been a pretty tight couple weeks, with members of the team visiting family before Christmas, conventions, and one of us needing to emergency move across the US. We have at least been able to discuss and solve some pressing questions about how to proceed. On my end at least things have been reasonable, and I’ve continued to keep at my programming studies and even had some good enough pain days to get some art progressed, too.

If I can keep up this pace of learning I hope to be able to begin contributing to CS’s code in the new year. At this point I think I could get some things working, but my implementation would likely create more work when Crimson has to rewrite it. GUI at least is where I think I’m getting a good grip, and since it’s all my design I’m in the best position to put it together.

I don’t predict a great deal happening over the holiday and new year as everyone’s schedules are understandably pretty well booked. I hope you all have a great season and thank you all again for your continued love and support. Perhaps soon I can start feeling as though I deserve it.

December Update

Hey guys,

There’s been some good progress since last time. Our team’s newest additions have been learning and contributing to Crimson’s very high-level code. Unfortunately there’s nothing juicy I can show you for it, since the progress made has all been back-end stuff, but I’m hoping that’ll change soon.

As mentioned previously, the current task is to create a kind of system that will oversee changes to the world based on quest stages and other events. If you have a quest that has you rescue someone from a fire, for instance, we can’t have the player able to go into the building as normal, as if nothing’s going on in there. So the quest needs to talk to the scenario manager, and the scenario manager then dictates what can and cannot be done. Either just locking buildings at certain times of the day, or adding certain encounters to the random pool in certain places, things like that.
